Fifteen of Australia’s most promising young male water polo players are currently embarking on a European tour with the Australian Born ’98 team. The team came together in May to compete at the 20 and Under National Championships held in Sydney, prior to competing against Croatia, Hungary and Serbia on their European tour, who are considered as three of the best water polo nations in the world.
Queensland is lucky to boast three representatives in the team, being Nick Porter, Jared de Vries and Hugh Anstey. The boys have been training with the Croatian junior squad that is preparing for the European Junior Championships in 4 weeks’ time. Current training regimes include morning weights, stretching and roller work, followed by an hour swim set and then an hour and a half game with either the Croatian junior boy’s team, or skill work independently.
A few words from Coach, Andrei Kovalenko
“We have a good group of boys in this squad and have had some very pleasing results in the open leg of the tour, including the 20 & under national championships. Yes the trip to Europe was long, however the squad has mostly coped with this and got on with the job we came here to do.
“We had an adjustment to make in changing playing formats from five on five to six on six, with bigger balls and playing field and a total change in playing tactics, and again the squad has adjusted well.
“We do have a heavy and intense work load whilst we are on tour and we are endeavouring to get the most out of the time we are in Europe, and have to opportunity to train with players of the calibre Europe presents. Having the team Physio is an enormous help in managing the players’ physical requirements.
“We are having some very pleasing outcomes in the games considering the work load the squad is doing, it is really pleasing to see the squad adapt and embrace what we are doing as we embark on the journey that is the preparation for the World Champs in 2016.”
The team departed for Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday May 23 and will be based there before moving on to Budapest, Hungary the following week.
