Strategic PlanA strategic plan is considered a long-term plan (3 - 5 years’ time) and clearly articulates how a club will achieve its purpose and mission. A strategic plan will help to ensure the club continues to operate effectively and in a consistent direction despite changes in leadership over time. When creating the club’s strategic plan, the club president should lead the process with the collaboration of 4-5 key club leadership positions. Stage One: Pre-planning PositionThe club should start the process by establishing a clear understanding of where they have come from and where they are now before any forward planning can be completed. Clubs should consider:
A SWOT analysis will help to identify the club’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Stage Two: DevelopmentHaving assessed the current pre-planning position, clubs should draw upon this information to review or identify the purpose, vision, values, objectives, strategic initiatives, and key performance indicators that will form their strategic plan. Accompanying the strategic plan should be a list of the assumptions upon which the strategic plan was developed. When the plan is reviewed annually or when it is time to develop the next phase of the plan, the club should check if the assumptions, underpinning the plan are still relevant and update as required, before proceeding forward. This assumptions should be listed with the strategic plan. Stage Three: ImplementationUsing the strategic framework template, clubs can begin to implement the plan by determining objectives, initiatives to achieve the strategic objectives and key performance indicators to measure the success. Stage Four: EvaluationA strategic plan is not a "set and forget" document and should be tabled at each committee meetings with the responsible people providing updates on progress against strategic priorities. It is also a key document to refer to and consider in a decision-making process.
