FINA Women’s Junior World Champs kicks off tonight

The Australian Women’s Junior Team will kick off their FINA World Championships campaign tonight in Volos, Greece, with the Aussies set to take on the host nation in the opening game.

The team will head into the Tournament with strong momentum after winning the OMV International U20 Tournament in Hungary last week.

But the Aussies won’t be resting easy as they prepare for tough competition in the preliminary rounds when they meet Greece, China and South Africa.

Australian Junior Women’s Head Coach Aleks Osadchuk said the squad has come together well but to be competitive at the World Championships level they will need to focus on playing together as a team.

“Our strength is in our unity and ability to support each other in any given moment in and out the pool,” said Osadchuk.

“Every single player is able to step up in any moment and the rest of the team will support them all the way through.

“We have great depth in every position and more so players are able to fulfil a vast spectrum of different duties in the game. We have worked on understanding of each other and we will keep developing in this area as a Team.

“We will not ‘run in front of ourselves’ and take each game at the time. We will play moment by moment, situation by situation and we will cherish each situation as a great learning skill for the future.

“We hope all of the selected athletes will continue their individual development and carry on this experience to the next level,” he said.

Prior to departing Australia, Alice Williams shared what the team can expect from the host nation Greece who they’ll meet in game one of the Tournament.

“Our first game is against Greece and we can expect a tough component.  They will play with a lot of counter attacking, outside shooting – but hopefully we can match them,” she said.

The Opening Ceremony has kicked off the and the Aussies will face Greece on Monday 4 September, 3:00am AEST.
