FINA World Champs groups released

Budapest, 24 February 2017 – The Organisational Committee of the 17th FINA World Championship and the representatives of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) have chosen by lot the groups of the water polo tournament of the water world championship to be held later this year.

At the official draw ceremony, the groups of the 12th women’s world championship to the held in Volos and the 19th men’s junior world championship to the held in Belgrade were also chosen by lot by the Organisational Committee of the 17th FINA World Championship and the International Swimming Federation (FINA).

At Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge Hotel the participants were greeted by Dr Tünde Szabó, state secretary for sports and Tamás Gyártás, the Vice President of FINA. Tünde Szabó stressed: „it is a great honour for every nation if their country can organise one the greatest and most prestigious sports events; so it is a tremendous achievement for our sports diplomacy that Hungary can organise and host the 17th FINA World Championship.” She added: this is the best evidence that the country’s sports politics is on the right track.

Participants of the ceremony included Mr. Cornel Marculescu, the managing director of FINA, Mr Dimitris Diathesopoulos, a member of FINA’s Bureau and the draw was conducted by Mr Gianni Lonzi, the chairman of the Technical Water Polo Committee of FINA.

The groups of the men’s tournament of the world championship are:

Group A: Brazil, Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Canada

Group B: France, Australia, Italy, Hungary

Group C: Spain, Serbia, Greece, South Africa

Group D: USA, Japan, Croatia, Russia

The groups of the women’s tournament of the world championship are:

Group A: Italy, Brazil, Canada, China

Group B: New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, USA

Group C: Japan, Netherlands, Hungary, France

Group D: Australia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Greece
