The Australian senior women’s water polo squad is selected from the Australia’s Winning Edge (AWE) Athlete Categorisation List updated in April and October each year. Athletes nominated in the Podium category targeted for the upcoming Olympic Games will be prioritised as per the WPA Selection Policy. Selected squad members form part of the Australian women’s water polo team, the Aussie Stingers, a team which has experienced international success over many years. The women’s water polo program is a decentralised camps based program in which female athletes train in their home daily training environment under the guidance of their relevant state sporting Institutes and academies and come together several times each year for training camps. Selected squad members form the Australian women’s water polo team, the Aussie Stingers.
The Aussie Stingers compete in a range of competitions in preparation for major events such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup and World League. It is a world class program, highlighted by significant international success including gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and bronze at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
