General Information

Uni Course: Human Resource Management

Institution: Macquarie University, NSW

Marital status: Long term relationship

Age when began competing in your sport: 13

Where did you begin competing: Mackellar Girls High, NSW

Any superstitions or rituals before competition: I have to listen to music

Most memorable sporting achievement: Walking out for our first game at the London 2012 Olympics. I was trying to look serious and not smile but I couldn’t help it. The atmosphere was so amazing and the crowd was so close. I also loved looking into the crowd and seeing my family, friends and boyfriend and knowing they were there supporting me and had been my whole career. Also when that final buzzer went off and we had won the bronze medal it was a feeling of relief but also up there with one of the most memorable sporting moments of my life

Have you had to come any major adversities in your life/career: In 2005, my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the same year doctors found a tumour on my dad’s heart. Eight years on and they are both extremely fit and healthy. However, in 2009, I lost my sister Jessica to a long battle with depression and anorexia. That year I also had to have major surgery on my shoulder due to injuries obtained playing and training. Each of these experiences has been life changing in different ways and has definitely made me a lot stronger and more motivated to achieve my goals

Any relatives/spouses who have competed internationally: My sister Emma competed at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics in skeleton where she finished 10th (best by an Aussie in that event)

What made you choose this sport: My parents met playing water polo and they loved it, so they encouraged Emma, Jess and I to play when we hit high school. As I also mentioned my teacher at school was gold medallist Debbie Watson who saw potential in me early on

Who is the most influential person in your sporting career and why: It is really hard because I have a lot of people who have influenced me, but my family have been extremely important as role models on what I need to do if I want to be successful

Which person do you most look up to in your sporting career and why: I once trained with the Paralympic squad in Canberra when I was coming back from surgery. I spoke to them after trainings and not once did they complain about their situation. They trained hard and were so grateful for being able to do what they loved. I think that attitude is amazing and makes me so grateful that I get to be doing what I love everyday. They reminded me that no matter what happens in life it could always be worse

What are your ambitions both during and after your sporting career: I want to be able to reach my potential as an athlete. As for career I want to find something I love and be happy getting up every single day to do it

I dream of: Pushing myself to my limits and having no regrets and never wondering if I could be better or achieve more

What is your proudest sporting moment: Winning a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and winning silver at the 2013 FINA World Championships
