Lachie Hollis has been playing water polo for years now. When he was a vital Sydney Uni Member and a junior Australian Captain he made the decision to move to Italy to begin a professional career. During this time, he endured severe and chronic back pain. After months of scans and medical investigation, he was diagnosed with a rare type of Cancer. He was 24.
After rounds of chemotherapy and surgeries he continued to show great determination – both physically and mentally. He demonstrated great strength in adversity by maintaining his training whilst undergoing treatment, something the doctor’s said was impossible.
In recognition of his fight and determination, Sydney University Lions Water Polo Club has instigated a three day tournament to be known as the Lachy Hollis Challenge (LHC).
Lachie Hollis said water polo as one of the keys to getting him through his darkest days.
”Water Polo saved my life. Without the high intensity training I would never have got the pain and gone for the tests that found the cancerous mass,” Hollis said.
With this in mind, Sydney Uni is throwing down the challenge to other clubs to enter their players and take part in this inaugural inter club water polo challenge.
The Sydney Uni Lions Men’s Water Polo community is very proud to dedicate this tournament to Lachlan Hollis.
Sydney University is now sending out Expressions of Interest for the LHC.
There is an entry fee of $400 per team (including GST) payable in full at the time of selection. The entry fee is inclusive of games, extra events (TBA) and pool entry for all players, coaches and managers.
Due to this being a first time event, positions are limited. The age group for this tournament is born 2002. Rules will be similar to the WPNSW Under 14 State Championships held earlier this year.
