Water Polo Australia has been saddened by the of passing of former Water Polo Queensland Junior President Andrew “Andy” Donaldson. Andy died peacefully after a battle with bowel cancer at St Andrew’s Memorial Hospital in Brisbane on Saturday July 11 aged 76 years.
Andy was instrumental in the success of Junior Water Polo within Queensland. In 1972/73 Andy was the first president of the Queensland Amateur Junior Water Polo Association, (an affiliate of the QAWPA). Under Andy’s leadership the state was able to cater for Juniors and also Women. Assisted by Ms Lyra Lister (Secretary at the time), Andy had a solid record of improving success. From last in 1972 the Queensland Under 18 Men’s Team went to second in 1976 and first in 1977. Andy also administrated the first Queensland Representative Women’s Team who travelled to Melbourne in 1974.
Andy was a driving force at Magyars water polo club and dedicated to the Juniors of our sport. Andy’s Granddaughter has been one of thousands of Juniors who have benefited from the work he did in the 70s for Women and Juniors enabling them to represent Queensland. We are sure he was proud of his Granddaughters success and what the future holds for her in the sport.
The Australian water polo community wishes to extend its condolences to Andy’s family and friends at this sad point in time.
Josse Van Opdenbosch Jnr, has kindly advised the following regarding funeral arrangements:
Committal of Andys’ ashes will be at the Brookfield Historical Cemetery and Memorial Garden (corner of Brookfield Road and Gold Creek Road ) at 1:00 pm Friday 17 July. It is to be a casual affair with anyone wishing to say a few words welcome to do so.
After the committal, drinks and finger food will be served at 9 Alpine Drive, Draper. It is off Eatons Crossing Road, just before or after Bickles Restaurant depending which way you take. Cannot miss the house as it is a converted train carriage with a deck out front.
Anyone seeking further information should contact the WPQ office to be put in touch with Josse.
