The Canberra Water Polo Academy will host an under 12’s competition April 25-26
The Canberra Water Polo Academy will this weekend host an exciting weekend of water polo when the ‘Waterpolooza’ water polo festival kicks into gear over the ANZAC weekend, April 25-26, 2015 at Gungahlin Leisure Centre, Canberra, ACT.
In what will be one of the busiest weekend’s in the Australian capital, a total of 19 teams will take part in Waterpolooza that will see the participants split into two divisions, with each division having Bowl, Plate, Bronze and Gold medal finals on Sunday April 26.
Of the teams entered there are nine from Sydney and two each from the Central Coast of New South Wales, Ovens and Murray on the NSW/Victoria border as well as six from the Australian Capital Territory.
The event is designed for players born in 2003 or later and is aimed to be a fun and interactive introduction to water polo. With a focus on participation, the event will be played with modified rules and be attractive for athletes of all abilities.
Ryan McDermott of the Canberra Water Polo Academy said that the water polo festival is part of a plan to enhance junior development in the region in an encouraging way.
“At the Canberra Water Polo Academy we have our Junior Dolphins program which is our beginner program, and around 12 months ago we introduced a under 12’s mixed competition as part of that. ” he said.
“Beginning our own tournament was a logical extension to our own program to expose our players to the game outside of Canberra and create an environment where players from our surrounding regions can also benefit.
“No one will be playing for sheep stations, it’s all about fun and participation and providing the kids with a good experience so we can retain them as long term water polo athletes.
In conjunction with the tournament for under 12’s players, a referees course will be held today (Friday April 24), with all referees that complete the course having the opportunity to referee games across the weekend and be assessed.
Attendees at the event will also take time out on Saturday April 25 to hold an ANZAC ceremony which will be conducted by Brigadier Peter Gates.
