As the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games inch closer, many of our Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers continue to sharpen their skills for their clubs throughout Europe and America.
Take a look at how our Aussie athletes are tracking in their overseas competitions.
AUSSIE SHARKS
ITALIAN MEN’S A1 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Aussie Joe Kayes is representing Pro Recco in the LEN Champions League, and enjoyed a comfortable 17-8 victory over Nuoto Catania on Saturday. His next match is this Saturday at 6pm local time against Sport Management.
ITALIAN MEN’S A2 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Australia’s Nick Elphick was involved in a nail-biter on Saturday for RN Sori with the match ending in a 7-7 draw against Sportiva Sturla. Elphick will be in action again this upcoming weekend against Crocera.
CROATIAN MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (PRVA LIGA)
Despite the presence of Australia’s Nathan Power, Jadran were unable to overcome the might of rivals Jug CO, losing 7-12 in the LEN Champions League. The Croatian team will have the opportunity to redeem themselves when they face HAVK Mladost on Saturday, 8:15pm local time.
Aussie Sharks teammate Tim Putt is also competing in Croatia, representing Primorie in their 10-8 victory over Budva in Croatia's national league on Saturday.
HUNGARIAN MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (MALE OB I)
Aussie Sharks captain Aaron Younger is competing in Hungary's national league and help guided Ferencvárosi Torna to an 11-6 victory against BVSC-Zuglo on Sunday.
Younger’s international side is currently undefeated this season, winning all 12 of their encounters in the competition.
SPANISH MEN’S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (LIGA PREMAAT)
Aussie George Ford is currently representing Mataro Quadis in Spain and featured in a tense 5-6 loss to CN Terrassa on Saturday. Ford will cherish a well-deserves weekend off before resuming the competition 23 February when Mataro Quadis take on Echeyde Small Brave in Joan Serra.
GREECE MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (A1 ETHNIKI)
Anthony Hyrsanthos' Vouliagmeni secured a comfortable win over Ethnikos 7-1 in a one-sided affair. He’ll return to the pool this Saturday when Vouliagmeni play Ano Glyfadas at 2pm local time.
AUSSIE STINGERS
AMERICAN COLLEGE (NCAA)
Abby Andrews has joined Madeleine Steere at Michigan University and recently their side placed third in the Triton Invitational, after defeating UC Irvine 9-8 in the bronze medal playoff. This result came after Michigan qualified for the semi-final by beating Cal State Northbridge 14-5 and Arizona State 6-5.
Andrews has been already been named CWPA Rookie of the Week three times this season since making her debut after joining the team less than three weeks before the season started as a January enrollee.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Bronte Halligan and her UCLA teammates placed second in the Triton Invitational after losing 3-10 in the Championship game to USC which included Aussie Junior Matilda Kearns.
Kearns help secure the USC women's sixth straight title at the Triton Invitational netting her sides tenth and final goal.
Fellow Australian Junior Carla Traplin has arrived at California Bears Women's Water Polo and has wasted no time getting involved. In her latest match Traplin scored one goal to assists California Bears in there 15-11 win over Pacific. They will be back in action this Saturday against UC Davis.
ITALIAN WOMEN’S A1 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Aussie Elle Armit suffered a narrow loss playing for Plebiscito Padova in Campionato Serie A1, the 7-8 result highlighting a close contest against Rapallo Pallanuoto. Armit and her teammates have the opportunity to bounce back when they face RN Florentina this Saturday at 6pm local time.
Jessica Zimmerman is currently representing Rapallo PN in the Italian League. Zimmerman’s team faced a challenging Plebiscito Padova on Saturday, but emerged the victors in a nail-biting 8-7 contest.
HUNGARIAN WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (FEMALE OB I)
With the help of Australia’s Lena Mihailovic, Ferencvrosi TC enjoyed an 11-6 win against BVSC-Zuglo on Sunday – this result puts them second on the competition ladder, only two points behind top spot. Ferencvrosi TC will again face BVSC-Zuglo this Saturday in Budapest.
