AUSTRALIAN WATERPOLO LEAGUE - ROUND 11 WRAP

As the Australian Waterpolo League home and away season draws to a close, it was a thrilling penultimate round with games across Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart and Perth.

VICTORIAN PHOENIX v UTS BALMAIN TIGERS

Victorian Phoenix hosted UTS Balmain Tigers in Melbourne for Round 11 of the Australian Waterpolo League. With back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday, both teams were eager to play some good water polo.

In a match up against her old team, Victoria’s Rowie Webster scored a hat trick of goals. But it wasn’t enough to hold back the Tigers, who outscored the Phoenix 13-7. In the men’s game, Matt Wilson was outstanding for the Tigers scoring an impressive five goals and leading his team to a 17-7 victory.

On Sunday, fresh off her Aussie Stingers debut Sienna Hearn scored four goals, with Katie Dudley also with four, helping their team to a 19-2 win over home side Victorian Phoenix. Matt Wilson backed up his performance on Saturday to top score for the Tigers again on Sunday with 3, and the Balmain men claiming their second victory 11-2.

FYFE ADELAIDE/HOBART JETS v HUNTER HURRICANES

FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets headed to Tasmania for the second time this season, this time hosting Hunter Hurricanes. The Jets women managed to start the weekend with a strong 8-2 victory over visitors Hunter Hurricanes. However in the men’s, newly capped Aussie Shark Keenan Marsden lead his Hunter Hurricanes side to a 13-10 victory, courtesy of three goals of his own.

On Sunday, both matches were closely fought, and in the women’s the teams could not be separated at the end of regular time, resulting in an 11-all draw. In the men’s, Hunter Hurricanes continued their winning momentum, to claim an 11-10 win.

QUEENSLAND THUNDER v ACU CRONULLA SHARKS

Queensland Thunder hosted ACU Cronulla Sharks for a double header in Round 11. The women opened the weekend, with a close game ending in an 11-all draw. In the men’s game, visitors Cronulla managed to claim a 13-9 victory, and four vital championship points.

Queensland Thunder women finished the weekend unbeaten, keeping their streak alive, and bouncing back from a draw to win 15-6. After making her Aussie Stingers debut only a few weeks ago, Charlize Andrews returned to her Queensland Thunder to top score on Sunday with four goals. Tokyo Olympian Abby Andrews, fellow Aussie Stinger Bridget Leeson-Smith, Kate Blew and Jessica Emerson all scored two goals each.

In the men’s game, four time Olympian Rhys Howden lead with experience to guide his team to a 10-8 win. Howden top scored with three goals, followed by London Olympian Billy Miller with two.

DRUMMOYNE DEVILS v SYDNEY UNI LIONS

Cross city rivals Drummoyne Devils and Sydney Uni Lions went head to head at Drummoyne Swimming Centre on Sunday, in a bid to boost their positions on the overall championship ladder.

The women’s game went down to the wire, with the teams tied and a penalty goal awarded to Sydney Uni just before the end of regular time. It was Danielle Morrissey who scored the winning goal for her Sydney Uni Lions to win 11-10. With one round remaining, Sydney Uni Lions and Drummoyne Devils are in equal fourth place on 34 points.

Sydney Uni men also managed to upset the home side, with a 12-2 victory courtesy of three goals each from Aussie Sharks squad members and FINA World League Intercontinental Cup silver medalists Andrej Grugurevic and Tom McJannett. The win cements Sydney Uni’s position of third on the overall ladder, just two points behind Drummoyne.

KAP7 CUP WESTERN AUSTRALIA - UWA TORPEDOES v FREMANTLE MARINERS/MARLINS

In the fourth of a five game series, UWA Torpedoes and Fremantle Mariners/Marlins went head to head at UWA Aquatic Centre on Saturday evening.

The Fremantle Marlins started the night off with a strong win, defeating UWA at their home pool 15-7. In the second game of the night, UWA powered home to deliver a 9-5 win, with dual Olympian George Ford the top goal scorer with three.

There is one game remaining in the KAP7 Cup Western Australia, before both clubs will head to Sydney for the Challenger Series leading into the Australian Waterpolo League finals.
