FIRST GAMES OF WA CHALLENGE WON AND DONE AT DRUMMOYNE SWIM CENTRE

On a wet and wild day at Drummoyne Swimming Centre, the first games of the WA Challenge were won and done.

Having not travelled to the east coast since the 2020 Australian Waterpolo League season, Fremantle Water Polo Club and UWA Torpedoes welcomed the opportunity to play against the fifth and sixth placed teams, with two men’s and two women’s spots up for grabs in the Finals Series, set to be played form 8-10 April 2022.

 

WOMEN: FREMANTLE MARLINS 12 d ACU CRONULLA SHARKS 11

Fremantle Marlins commenced their finals tilt with a thrilling victory in a penalty shoot out over ACU Cronulla Sharks.

Having won five Australian Waterpolo League premierships in the past, Fremantle headed to the east coast for the first time this season, eager to make an early mark on the competition.

Bolstered by the return of dual Olympian Zoe Arancini, who spent the home and away season playing for Drummoyne Devils, Fremantle came out firing.

But Cronulla weren’t going down without a fight, Michaela Davies proving crucial in goals for the Sharks.

In the end, it was the experience of dual Olympian Glencora McGhie who guided her side through a penalty shoot out to win 12-11.

WOMEN: UWA TORPEDOES 11 d UNSW WESTS KILLERWHALES 10

In the second game of the day, UWA Torpedoes defeated UNSW Wests Killerwhales in a close fought battle - the end score falling UWA’s way 11-10.

Having spent the home and away season playing for ACU Cronulla Sharks, Claire Durston returned to her beloved UWA Torpedoes for the WA Challenge, proving crucial in goals for the visitors.

A mix of youth and experience were on the board for the Torpedoes, with Dayna O’Leary, Pippa Pedley, Isabella Sayer, Glenda Morgan and Allegra Childs scoring two goals each.

The UWA Torpedoes will now face ACU Cronulla Sharks on Thursday, with UNSW Wests Killerwhales to play Fremantle.

MEN: FREMANTLE MARINERS 7 def by ACU CRONULLA SHARKS 12

ACU Cronulla Sharks managed to keep the momentum they built during the home and away season alive, defeating Fremantle Mariners 12-7 on day one of the WA Challenge.

In wet and wild conditions at Drummoyne Swim Centre, it was a team effort from Cronulla that got them over the line, with seven players scoring goals including two each from Tristan Glanznig, Milos Maksimovic, Ben Matthews, James Dickson, Mason McQuet.

The win will give the Sharks an added confidence boost, heading into their next game against UWA Torpedoes tomorrow, with two spots in the Australian Waterpolo League Finals Series up for grabs.

MEN: QUEENSLAND THUNDER 12 d UWA TORPEDOES 7

In the final game of the day at Drummoyne Swim Centre, Queensland Thunder stamped their authority on the competition with a 12-7 victory over UWA Torpedoes.

Experience came to the fore, with London Olympian Billy Miller scoring five goals for the Queensland Thunder, closely followed by four time Olympian Rhys Howden with three goals.

With their sights firmly set on a finals berth, the Queensland Thunder men will be looking for another big game tomorrow against the Fremantle Mariners.
