Queensland Thunder Men’s and Women’s teams have both finished the KAP7 Cup (Adelaide) undefeated, and have been crowned joint KAP7 Cup champions.
With WA teams unable to take part, the KAP7 Cup (Adelaide) became a three club tournament between hosts Adelaide Jets, Queensland Thunder and new Australian Waterpolo League club Victorian Phoenix.
After an intense five days of competition, both Queensland Thunder Men’s and Women’s remained undefeated, taking out the KAP7 Cup crown.
Tokyo Olympian and Queensland Thunder Women’s player Abby Andrews said she was so proud of her team for getting the win.
“Starting with the Adelaide road trip was definitely a great confidence boost for us,” Andrews said.
“We’ve all grown as players, and really matured as a squad over the last two years. We got to showcase our best skills, and prove that we are a threat going into this season.
“Our whole squad got to play great minutes, everyone scored some awesome goals and we played really well as a team,” she said.
Andrews said it was also great to be able to officially welcome Victorian Phoenix to the 2022 Australian Waterpolo League.
“It’s good to see them back, they've got lots of experienced players on their side,” Andrews said.
Any team with Rowie (Webster) in it is none that you can take lightly. It’s really exciting to have them back in the Australian Waterpolo League this year,” she said.
With the home and away season commencing following the KAP7 Cup in Adelaide, Andrews said it’s shaping up to be an interesting season.
“We live streamed a lot of the KAP7 Cup Sydney games, and Drummoyne and Balmain really showed their true colours, and played some really great water polo,” Andrews said.
“So they definitely can’t be overlooked as hot contenders for the championship title.
“Sydney Uni have also always been a strong team, so we do have our work cut out for us and it’s going to be a great test to see how our team goes in those challenging games,” she said.
