Aussies sides book FINA World League Super Final spots after impressive outing at FINA World World League Intercontinental Cup

Australia’s men’s and women’s sides have both booked their spots in the FINA World League Super Final after impressive performances during the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup.

Despite both sides having one match remaining at the World League Intercontinental Cup in Peru, they have both done enough to secure spots in the Super Final that will be held 23-29 July in France.

The Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers will round out their Intercontinental Cup taking on rivals USA.

AUSSIE STINGERS I DAY 6 ACTION

The Aussie Stingers came off their bye to deliver their most convincing win yet, defeating Colombia 33-1, maintaining their unbeaten record.

Tokyo Olympian Amy Ridge again took out the player of the match, with Ridge, Andrews and Hearn the leading scorers for the Aussies with five goals each.  For full results - click here.

The Aussie Stingers finished the 2019 Intercontinental Cup [the last time the tournament was held] with a silver medal, and will be eager to round out the tournament with a win over the defending champions USA.

Olympian Amy Ridge said after today's match: “After a really good consolidated team win [over Colombia], tomorrow we are really excited to play the USA.

“It is essentially a final for us, so a really important, high pressure game to make sure we finish out the tournament on a high,” said Ridge.

The tournament will be decided with the final women’s encounter between unbeaten Australia and defending World League champion USA.  However while the Aussie Stingers will head into the match unbeaten, the USA come in with one loss having gone down to Canada on day five.

The winner of the Intercontinental Cup may not come from the Australia vs USA match.   If Canada beat Colombia and if USA defeats the Aussie Stingers , it would see a three way tie between Australia, Canada and USA, with the results between the three the big decider.

The stage is set for a spectacular final day of women’s competition.

AUSSIE SHARKS I DAY 6 ACTION

The Aussie Sharks dominated the semi final against Brazil, winning the match 11-6 to book their spot in the gold medal match of the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup.

It is the second win for the Aussies against Brazil, this time extending their winning scoreline from one to five goals.

The Aussies were strong from the outset, setting up a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. While they allowed the Brazillians to get on the board in the second quarter with four goals, they were able to match their efforts to extend the scoreline to 8-4 at half time.

A strong defensive effort from the Sharks in the second half allowed Brazil to only manage one goal in each quarter, while the Aussies notched another three to bring home a solid win. Aussie Sharks Co-Captain was one again awarded player of the match.

Aussie Sharks Head Coach, Tim Hamill said: “That was a really pleasing performance tonight. Before the game we spoke about the opportunity for this game, both for the team and individuals and pleasingly we put our best game forward for the semi final.

“We identified three of their main players which we were able to nullify for most of the game.

“We are really looking forward to taking on the USA tomorrow in the gold medal game,” he said.

The Aussies Sharks now move into the gold medal match with the opportunity to defend their FINA World League Intercontinental Cup title.  They will face the USA who, like the Aussie Sharks, come into the final with four wins and one loss.
