2020 KAP7 AYWPC | Day 10 Wrap
Published Tue 21 Jan 2020
It was a red hot day in Brisbane, not just temperature wise but in the pools as clubs put it all on the line in a bid to secure vital points ahead of finals.
Tropical conditions out of the pool made a tough day of competition, but that didn’t deter players with loads of smiles around the grounds.
Plenty of matches went down to the wire, showing the strong depth of water polo from across Australia.
Drummoyne Devils 16&U Captain, Lachlan Hay, was pleased his team could pull off a narrow two goal win today.
“At the start it was a pretty close game, we were down in the first half but we came back to win 6-4,” said Hay.
“At half time the coach said to just play strong press... I think we just got a bit smarter in the second half as well we stopped throwing balls away and better passes.”
The Devils have been making the most of their time together as a team at the KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.
“We’re a good strong team, I think we’ve started to come together as a team over summer and this competition.
“It’s good fun in Brisbane. We’re staying at a boarding house spending a lot of time with my mates.
“We’re going to Southbank beach today, just more time with the boys before tomorrow’s game,” he said.
Comments could be heard across all pools about the high quality of water polo in 12&U ranks since the age division was introduced to the national calendar four years ago.
Visiting from New South Wales, Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers 12&U girls said they are enjoying “everything” about the KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.
Team mate Sophie Dix commented: “We are having so much fun working as a team together.
“The only team that we get to play against sometimes (back home) is Sydney Uni, so it’s fun to play against other teams.”
The youngsters are having a ball in Brisbane with the whole team chiming in with what they’re up to away from the pool, with some taking to the scooters, some going to the movies and also plenty of Club BBQs.
Plenty more competition coming up tomorrow for the all important last day of action ahead of Finals day on Thursday 23 January 2020.
All medal matches on Thursday will be live streamed on OVO Play starting from 8:00am (local).
