Published Wed 31 Jan 2024
The 2024 season of the Australian Waterpolo League (AWL) is officially underway, with Thursday nights competitive and exciting west-coast clash setting the tone for the season.
Australia’s premier domestic water polo competition, the AWL will feature more than 250 games over 12 weeks, with finals set to be held from April 25-27 2024.
The 2024 edition of the event will also be one for the record books, marking the 20th season of the Women’s competition.
Teams from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia will leave it all in the pool week to week as they look to secure themselves a place in the finals and ultimately lift the trophy.
The 2024 season will also feature several international players from Greece, USA, Spain, Japan and New Zealand (to name a few) who have made the move to play in the AWL.
Water Polo Australia CEO Tim Welsford is thrilled to see the AWL return and is excited to see what’s to come in what is set to be the most competitive season yet.
"The Australian Waterpolo League is back with 11 Clubs from across the country featuring a men's and women's teams, battling it out for the 2024 trophy,” said Welsford.
"Our Clubs share a longstanding rivalry that will see mate versus mate, state versus state, all culminating in the Australian Waterpolo League Finals to be held in Sydney in April.
The AWL provides important competition opportunities for the next generation of Australian water polo talent as well as national squad members, with the 2024 season set to feature numerous Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks and Stingers as they prepare for Paris 2024.
"Throughout the tournament, some of our Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers will also be joining their home teams, as they look to put it all on the line for their Club as well as to impress Australian team selectors on the countdown to Paris,” said Welsford.
"We are thankful that more than 40 games will be broadcast via NewCorp's KommunityTV providing great coverage of the AWL across the 12 weeks and finals series.
"Thanks to the support of NewsCorp as well as AWL partners Kap7, the 2024 Australian Waterpolo League is sure to provide thrilling competition during an exciting Olympic year," he finished.
