2025 AUSTRALIAN WATERPOLO LEAGUE - WEEKEND 6 WRAP

With under a month left of regular matches left to play in the 2025 Australian Waterpolo League (AWL), a number of clubs over the weekend were looking to cement their places in this season’s finals series.

SYDNEY UNI LIONS  v UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLERWHALES

Week 6 of the AWL kicked off with a hometown grudge match between the Sydney Uni Lions and the UNSW Wests.

In the women's games, the Lions dominated both matches against the Wests winning 21-10 on Saturday and 20-12 on Sunday.

In the men’s games, it was the second placed Wests who got the better of the Lions in both weekend fixtures winning 23-12 on Saturday and 14-9 on Sunday.

 

VICTORIAN PHOENIX v UTS BALMAIN TIGERS 

The UTS Balmain Tigers headed down to Melbourne over the weekend to face-off against the Victorian Phoenix in a thrilling double header.

In the men’s games, it was the visitors who got the better of the homeside in both matches, defeating the Phoenix 15-9 on Saturday and 19-6 on Sunday.

In the women’s games, the Tigers made it a clean sweep winning 13-6 on Saturday and 19-7  on Sunday. 

 

DRUMMOYNE DEVILS v CRONULLA SHARKS

Drummoyne Devils and the Cronulla Sharks took to the Drummoyne Pool this weekend, 

In the women’s game, the Drummoyne Devils walked away with the league points defeating the Cronulla Sharks 15-11 on Saturday. 

In the men’s game, the Cronulla Sharks proved to be the better side on Saturday winning 13-9. 

 

 

GRIFFITH UNI QUEENSLAND THUNDER v FREMANTLE MARLINS/MARINERS 

The Griffith Uni Queensland Thunder hosted Fremantle this week, as Marlins veteran and two-time Olympian Glencora McGhie made history as she became the first female AWL player to play 400 matches on Saturday.

In the women’s games, McGhie scored an impressive three goals in her history-making game on Saturday, but the Thunder showed why they are the league leaders winning 9-6 on Saturday and 11-7 on Sunday. 

In the men’s games, the Fremantle Mariners recorded comfortable wins over the Thunder, defeating the homeside 13-5 on Saturday and 15-8 on Sunday.
