2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships - Week 1 Day 2 Wrap
Published Tue 15 Apr 2025
Pools across Perth were buzzing as teams from across the country returned for day two of the 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.
14&U and 18&U teams battled it at across four venues, with the action from three pools at Perth High Performance Centre livestreamed on KommunityTV - watch the replays here.
For some players, it’s their first time at an AYWPC, while for others they’ve been coming for a few years. In the 14&U Girls Gold division, Sydney Uni Lionesses’ Eva was in Perth in 2023, but for her teammate Charlotte it’s her first time in the WA capital.
“I really like how teams can come together and you get to play new teams that we haven’t played against before, there’s new challenges, and experience how we can come together and win as a team,” Eva said.
“Working together as a team has helped us get this far,” she said.
“I love playing water polo and being with all my friends,” Charlotte added. “It’s my first time being in Perth, so that’s really fun too,” she said.
Angus from 18&U Boys Gold Warriors Water Polo Club said he’s enjoying his time in Perth, and the speed of the game, which is a step up from his local competition.
“The venues are great, the teams are a lot harder so it’s a bit of a change in pace,” Angus said.
“This is my second time playing at the AYC, and I’m loving it so far,” he said.
Ine and Lily from 18&U Girls Gold Phoenix Breakers are part of a composite team for this year’s Australian Youth Water Polo Championships - with players from North Coast Phoenix and SNB Breakers joining forces.
“It’s been a learning experience for us, but I’ve definitely found ways to get better and improve my playing,” Ine said.
“We have a Sunday game every week, and it’s a lot more casual. But here there’s a lot more teams, with a lot more specialities. And there’s more we have to do to match their level,” she said.
“We’ve learnt to play against different kinds of players, and people with different strengths and different weaknesses,” Lily added.
“We wouldn’t have done that if it wasn’t for AYC, and we’ve definitely learnt a lot because of AYC,” she said.
Cronulla Sharks 14&U Boys players Henry and Kilian said the level of competition at the AYWPC is something they are loving being a part of.
“It’s really cool so far, and it’s been a good atmosphere,” Henry said. “The pools are really nice, I like how competitive it is,” Kilian said.
“It’s a great experience playing at nationals, there’s a much higher skill level compared to home and we’ve been training really hard to get here, lots of swimming,” Kilian said.
