UTS BALMAIN TIGERS v DRUMMOYNE DEVILS
It was a battle of the bridge for the first week of Australian Waterpolo League, with rivals UTS Balmain Tigers and Drummoyne Devils meeting at St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill.
In the women’s match, it was the UTS Balmain Tigers which claimed bragging rights - a young side bolstered by four-time Olympian Bronwen Knox - with a 11-9 win.
In the men’s, defending champions the Drummoyne Devils claimed a one goal win, 21-20.
FREMANTLE MARLINS/MARINERS v UWA TORPEDOES
A clash in the west saw Fremantle and UWA Torpedoes go head to head on the first weekend of AWL action.
Fremantle Marlins (women) started their season strong, with an 11 goal victory over cross town rivals UWA Torpedoes 18-7. The goal scoring was led by Olympic bronze medalist and Fremantle captain Glencora McGhie who scored four, with teammates Stephania Haralabidis and Jessica Zimmerman also slotting four goals each.
American import Hannes Daube scored five goals to help the UWA Torpedoes to a 13-10 win in the men’s game.
CRONULLA SHARKS v SYDNEY UNI LIONS
Spanish import Clara Espar Llaquet helped the Sydney Uni Lions to their first win of the season, against the Cronulla Sharks. C Espar Lllaquet top scored with four goals, with 10 of her Lions team mates also scoring goals to record a 20-5 win.
Loui Schuler was the top goal scorer in the men’s game with four goals, a crucial part in his team’s 11-6 victory.
HUNTER HURRICANES v UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLERWHALES
The Hunter Hurricanes made their first trip to Sydney city on the opening weekend of the AWL competition to match up against UNSW Wests Magpies/Killerwhales.
In the women’s match, UNSW’s Sophia Cooper scored four goals to lead her team to a 13-9 win.
Seven-time AWL champions UNSW Wests Magpies were dominant in their first game of season 2025, recording a 25-8 win.
