Seven players celebrated milestones as the competition heated up on weekend two of the 2025 Australian Waterpolo League.

MILESTONES

Congratulations to the following players who achieved milestones over the second weekend of the Australian Waterpolo League competition.

  • Chaz Poot - Cronulla Sharks - 100 goals

  • Luke Pavillard - Fremantle Mariners - 100 games and 200 goals

  • Andrew Dunford - Hunter Hurricanes - 100 games

  • Rhys Howden - Griffith University Queensland Thunder - 350 games

  • Reilly Townsend - Griffith University Queensland Thunder - 100 goals

  • Nathan Power - UNSW Wests Magpies - 200 games

  • Cathryn Earl - UWA Torpedoes - 250 games

 

UWA TORPEDOES v HUNTER HURRICANES

UWA Torpedoes hosted two of their east coast counterparts for the second weekend of the Australian Waterpolo League competition.

On Friday, they played against Hunter Hurricanes, where they stormed home to claim a 21-6 victory, courtesy of five goals from Allegra Childs and bolstered by the return of Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers debutant Emma Putt, fresh off the back of their fourth place finish at the World Aquatics World Cup.

In the men’s, despite a four goal haul from Hunter’s Spencer Burdack, the UWA Torpedoes reigned supreme, with a 18-9 win.

The clubs faced off again on Sunday, with the UWA Torpedoes (women) claiming a second win, this time 15-8. The UWA Torpedoes (men) also claimed another win, with a 19-13 scoreline.

 

FREMANTLE MARLINS/MARINERS v UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLERWHALES

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Stephania Haralabidis top scored with six goals to help her team to a 14-6 victory over UNSW Wests Killerwhales, at the renowned Bicton Pool.

The UNSW Wests Magpies returned to their winning form, with a six goal victory on Friday, 17-11. Backing it up to win again on Sunday, 15-10.

In the second meeting of the weekend between the women’s teams, it was a closer affair, but the score still fell in favour of the Fremantle Marlins, 14-8.

SYDNEY UNI LIONS v UTS BALMAIN TIGERS

It was a close call in the Clash of the Cats on the second weekend of AWL action. In the women’s game, the Sydney Uni Lions managed to claim a one goal victory over their cross town rivals UTS Balmain Tigers, 12-11.

Ethan Parrish and Simone Bertino both scored four goals each to help the Balmain boys to a 18-14 win.

 

VICTORIAN PHOENIX v DRUMMOYNE DEVILS

The Drummoyne Devils women bounced back from an opening round loss, to claim a 12-10 win over home side Victorian Phoenix on weekend two.

It was another close affair in Sunday’s match up between Victoria and Drummoyne women, with only one goal in it, Drummoyne scoring 13 goals to Victoria’s 12.

In the men’s, five of Drummoyne’s players scored two goals in their 15-6 win against the Victorian club.

 

UWA TORPEDOES v UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLERWHALES

It was down to the wire on Sunday between the UWA Torpedoes and UNSW Wests Killerwhales (women) with the hosts claiming a one goal victory, 12-11.

A narrow three goal victory fell in favour of the UWA Torpedoes in the men’s game on Saturday, the final score 14-11.

On Monday, it was a tough battle between the two women’s teams once again, with only one goal separating the two. UWA ended the weekend unbeaten, recording a 13-12 win against UNSW.

In the men’s, it was another three goal victory for the UWA Torpedoes, the final score 13-10.

GRIFFITH UNI QUEENSLAND THUNDER v CRONULLA SHARKS

The Griffith University Queensland Thunder hosted Cronulla for their first games of season 2025.

In the women’s game, Queensland welcomed the return of Olympic silver medalist Alice Williams and Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers debutant Kasey Dalziel following the World Aquatics World Cup, and recorded an 8-6 win. 

Cronulla captain Rhys Holden scored four goals on Saturday to help his team to a 14-10 win.

It was deja vu on Sunday in the women’s game, with the Griffith Uni Queensland Thunder recording another two goal win, 9-7. The Cronulla men were dominant on Sunday, with a 19-11 win.

 

FREMANTLE MARLINS/MARINERS v HUNTER HURRICANES

There were goals aplenty in the clash between Fremantle Marlins and Hunter Hurricanes women, with hosts Fremantle claiming a 24-4 win. Fremantle Marlins (women) again storming home to a convincing win 19-5 on Monday.

In the men’s, Paris Olympian Luke Pavillard was instrumental for the Fremantle Mariners in their 22-10 win on Saturday, before going on to record a nine-goal victory in Monday’s match up against the Hunter Hurricanes.
