Adelaide Jets 18&U Boys ready to punch above their weight at 2022 AYWPC

When the Adelaide Jets 18&U Boys enter the pool for their 2022 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships debut on Thursday, they will hope to have left behind the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and focus on improving their top-8 result from the 2020 edition.

The last two years have been difficult for all junior teams across the country, but Adelaide Jets 18&U Boys captain Sam McKenzie feels like it was particularly difficult for his team. With South Australia being a much smaller State in terms of membership numbers compared to NSW, QLD and WA, losing any player has a relatively bigger impact on the team.

Yet, the difficult circumstances didn’t stop the team from training hard and achieving positive outcomes. “In the last five or six years we have had a number of junior Australian players named in Australian teams and we also won a silver medal when we were invited to play in the NSW Club Festival last Easter,” McKenzie said.

A proud captain, McKenzie is now confident that when the Jets 18&U Boys start their campaign on Thursday, they will have done everything in their power to make the most of their AYWPC participation and are ready to take on any rival.

“Our boys have definitely punched above their weight before and have produced some very decent results,” McKenzie said.

The Adelaide Jets will play their 2022 AYWPC debut match in the 18&U Boys Gold Division on 14 April, facing the UTS Balmain Tigers in the second match of Group A. The draws for all AYWPC age categories can be viewed here with all the information about the event also available on the event website.
