AUSTRALIAN TEAMS CONFIRMED FOR FINA WORLD LEAGUE INTERCONTINENTAL CUP IN PERU

Water Polo Australia is pleased to confirm the new look Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers teams for the upcoming World League Intercontinental Cup (WLICC) in Lima, Peru from 7-13 March 2022.
The WLICC will be the first international competition for both sides since the Tokyo Olympic Games, and also the major competition for new Head Coaches Tim Hamill and Paul Oberman at the helm.
The FINA World League Intercontinental Cup will afford both teams the opportunity to give athletes coming through the pathway the opportunity to step into the senior ranks and compete on the international stage for the first time.
After a positive training camp on the Gold Coast earlier this year, Oberman, who took over the helm in November 2021, is excited to give his youthful team an opportunity to represent the Aussie Stingers.
“I want to test out some of the younger athletes and provide an opportunity for some new members of the Stingers squad,” Oberman said.
“I aim to build a team for Paris and beyond and we want to provide opportunities for some new members of the Stingers squad,” Oberman said.
“Due to European Club and US College commitments we have been unable to select some of the returning Olympians, which in turn means we are selecting 5 debutants and another 4 athletes with less than 30 games experience.”
“I’m looking forward to working with this new look group in camp next week, and even further ahead to what is shaping up to be an exciting World League campaign,” he said.
Hamill has also selected a fresh faced Aussie Sharks team, following the retirement of some key players after the Tokyo Olympic Games.
“There have been some really exciting players who have put their hand up for selection in the Australian Waterpolo League that is currently underway,” Hamill said.
“It’s also exciting to see some boys returning from their international clubs to play in Australia again.
“We’ve selected a great mix of young and experienced players, and are looking forward to getting back into an international competition environment again,” he said.
