AUSSIE SHARKS TO HOST JAPAN IN TEST MATCH SERIES IN PERTH

The Australian Men’s Water Polo team will host Japan in a three test match series in Perth as part of the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in January 2023.

The Tri Nations Water Polo Test Match Series will be held on 11, 13 and 15 of January at HBF Stadium in Perth, with the Aussie Sharks to play Japan and the Aussie Stingers to take on reigning Olympic champions the USA. 

The Aussie Sharks last met Japan at the FINA World Championships in Hungary earlier this year, with the Japanese claiming a surprise win and announcing themselves to the rest of the world, finishing 10th overall. 

But Perth will be a happy stomping ground for the Aussie Sharks, who managed to deliver two wins over Japan at the FINA World League Intercontinental Cup in 2019 in Perth.  

With the USA men’s team confirming they were unable to attend in January, Water Polo Australia Performance Manager Charles Turner said they welcome the opportunity to go up against Japan.

“We have always shared a healthy rivalry with Japan, as one of our closest neighbours in the water polo community we have met regularly over the years.

“After losing to them in Hungary however, the Sharks will be looking for revenge at the Tri Nations Test Series in Perth, and with new look squads for both sides the contest promises to be hard fought.

“Traditionally Japan plays a similar brand of water polo to Australia, with both sides known to be quick in the water. But our Aussie Sharks will be hoping the home turf advantage will provide a winning edge,” he said. 

The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will be held in Perth, WA from 9-19 January 2023, supported by the West Australian Government through Tourism WA.

NOTE: Participants in the 2023 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will need to purchase tickets to attend the Tri Nations Test Match Series.

AUSTRALIAN YOUTH WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS

In partnership with the West Australian Government, through Tourism WA, Water Polo Australia will bring its largest annual event to Perth, WA over two weeks from 9-19 January 2023.   

• Week 1 | 9-13 January 2023: 14&U (Boys and Girls) and 18&U (Boys and Girls)

• Week 2 | 15-19 January 2023: 12&U (Boys and Girls) and 16&U (Boys and Girls)
