Aussie Stingers looking to maintain winning start

The Australian women’s water polo team are looking to continue their strong start to their Tokyo Olympic Games campaign as they prepare to take on European heavyweights Spain in game three.

The Aussie Stingers come into the match undefeated having won their opening two matches against Canada and the Netherlands and having a bye.

Spain are two from three wins, having dropped a match by one goal to the Netherlands, who the Aussie Stingers managed to defeat in game two.

The last time the two sides met at a major international was the 2018 FINA World Cup where Australia managed to deliver the win.

Prior to that, at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Spain were the victors in the 5-6 playoff by two goals.

But with fresh faces added to both teams since the last Olympic Games it will be a different ball game altogether, but dual Olympian Keesja Gofers says they know what they can expect from the Spaniards.

“Spain is an amazing team, they have some great centre forwards, some really fast drivers and some great outside shooters.

“We can expect them to be fast, to have a good structured game and they are things we like to value in ourselves.

“I think it will be a highly contested game and it will be a really competitive match but hopefully we come out on top.”

The Aussie Stingers will play against Spain on Friday 30 July at 8.50pm AEST.
