Aussies Abroad | 27 March

While most of our senior Australian team members are currently in Perth competing at the 2019 FINA World League Inter-Continental Cup, their overseas clubs and fellow Aussie athletes are still toiling away in multiple overseas competitions.

Read on to find out how our Aussie players and their teams are tracking.

AUSSIE SHARKS

HUNGARIAN MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (MALE OB I)

Aussie Sharks captain Aaron Younger and his FTC-Telekom's teammates claimed a dominant 16-9 win in a match where the group  scored the most goals for the season. As part of the fixture, Younger contributed to the win with a handy three goal effort.

Next match, Fradi as they are affectionately known, will travel to Spain aiming to takeaway three points in their clash against Barceloneta.

CROATIAN MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (PRVA LIGA)

While Nathan Power is helping his Aussie teammates at Perth in World League Super Final qualifications, his Croatian team of VK Jadran Split have recently secured a big win in their latest match over Partizan Raiffeisen.

Tim Putt is also another Aussie Shark currently playing on home soil in Perth, but will be hoping VK Primorje can turn it around in their next match after a tough loss.

SPANISH MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (LIGA PREMAAT)

Local Western Australian George Ford is relishing his time down under to play with the Aussie Sharks in Perth and will be buoyed by the fact his Spanish team, Quadis CN Mataro, we able to clutch a narrow one goal victory recently.

GREEK MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (A1 ETHNIKI)

Anthony Hyrsanthos is another overseas player who has returned to Australian shores in a bid for World League glory. While away from Greece his teammates secured a convincing 15-2 over Ydraikos.

ITALIAN MEN’S A1 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Joe Kayes has been on fire in Italy's national men's water polo competition and has been able to take this form to Perth with him to help the Aussie Sharks kickstart their campaign well. Italian powerhouse Pro Recco continue rolling on and claimed a comfortable win where they were nine goals in front at full time.

ITALIAN MEN’S A2 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Rn Sori's Nick Elphick again made an appearance on the scorer's card, netting a goal for himself in their 12-7 win against Brescia Waterpolo.

SERBIAN MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (A2 LIGA)

In Serbia’s National Division Two League, Australian Damien Williams will be happy with a strong performance as part of Valjevo Gorenge's most recent 15-9 win over VA Cattaro 9.

AUSSIE STINGERS

ITALIAN WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (CAMPIONATO SERIE A1)

Elle Armit has returned home and joined the Aussie Stingers in Perth to compete. Her fellow Plebiscito Padova teammates have managed to clinch a narrow one goal victory despite her absence.

An important part of the Aussie Stingers set up Jessica Zimmermann is enjoying her time back in her home state of Western Australia while her Italian club side of Rapallo Pallanuoto secured the points  with a big 10-goal win over RN Florentia.

GREEK WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE (A1)

Olympians and Aussie Stingers duo of Hannah Buckling and Keesja Gofers are currently playing in Perth but have continually put in solid performances for their Greek national league side Olympiacos. Their overseas club won big in the latest result, 15-9 over PAOK.

There next fixture will see three Aussies in the pool as Olympiacos take on Ethnikos which includes Morgan Baxter.

LAST RESULT:  Olympiacos SFP 15 – PAOK 9
NEXT FIXTURE: 13 April - Ethnikos v Olympiacos SFP
 
Baxter is another Aussie playing in Greece and will be happy with their one goal victory at home against PAOK, 11-10.

AMERICAN COLLEGE (NCAA)

The trio of Madeleine Steere, Abby Andrews and Sofie Pontre all ply their trade in the University of Michigan women's water polo team.

In their latest game, Freshman Abby Andrews had another huge game, matching a season high with four goals to go with four assists. She has 30 points in her last five games with 12 goals and 18 assists.

Junior Madeleine Steere also had a strong performance adding three goals and two assists in 16-8 victory over Indiana.

The Wolverines will begin the CWPA Conference schedule on 6 April when they travel to Boston, to take on Saint Francis, Brown and Princeton at Harvard University.

Bronte Halligan and UCLA have claimed two victories in their latest appearances in the pool as part of the American College competition.
