The Australian Youth Women’s team are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the FINA Youth Women’s World Championships which gets underway on Monday 1 August in Belgrade, Serbia.
The team have spent the last two weeks training in Europe, with camps in the Netherlands with the Dutch Youth Women’s team, as well as playing in the Pythia Cup in Greece and training alongside the Greek Youth Women’s team.
The Youth Women’s World Championships will be contested by 17 nations, including the world's heavy hitting water polo nations the USA, Hungary, Spain and Italy.
The Aussie young guns have drawn Pool C which will see the face off against South Africa, Netherlands and Canada in the group stages.
Head Coach Phil Bower said it’s been great to have the team together to train over the past few weeks and they are looking forward to getting competition under way.
“The team has grown over the last two weeks, they are experiencing polo of a level that they have never been part of previously,” Bower said.
“The team is growing in knowledge and ability, and that’s really pleasing to see.
“Our group comprises of Canada, South Africa and The Netherlands. Our first game against Canada is very important, a win here will set us up for a top two position in our group, with our game against Netherlands deciding number one and an extra day's rest.
“We are looking forward to arriving in Belgrade to fine tune before our game against Canada on August 1,” he said.
