AUSTRALIAN WATERPOLO LEAGUE - WEEKEND 10 WRAP

The #AWL2025 regular season drew to an end over the weekend, with the final six teams from each league locked in for the finals series, which will get underway Friday week (April 4-6).

UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLER WHALES v GRIFFITH UNI QUEENSLAND THUNDER 

In this week's opener, it was the UNSW Wests Magpies/Killer Whales and Griffith Uni Queensland Thunder who faced off in a double header at Ashfield Aquatic Centre. 

In the men’s games, the ladder leading Magpies proved once again why they are championship favourites, defeating the Thunder 25-13 on Thursday and 22-15 on Friday. 

In the women’s games, the Thunder kick started their final week of regular matches with a 19-6 and 17-8  victories over the Killer Whales.

 

UNSW WESTS MAGPIES/KILLER WHALES v DRUMMOYNE DEVILS 

The Magpies and Killer Whales were back in action early on Saturday afternoon as they took on the Drummoyne Devils. 

In the women’s game, the Devils will take confidence heading into the finals after notching up a convincing 21-10 win over the Killer Whales.

In the men’s game, the Magpies capped off an impressive weekend, defeating the Devils  17-7. The Magpies finished the regular season at the top of the men’s league ladder, pushing the UWA Torpedoes down to second position. 

 

UTS BALMAIN TIGERS v GRIFFITH UNI QUEENSLAND THUNDER 

The UTS Balmain Tigers were the next to host the Thunder in what was the interstate sides’ third and fourth games of the week. 

In the men’s games, Balmian clinched a 12-10 win on Saturday before the visitors hit back with a win in a 14-13 thriller. 

In the women’s games, a low scoring affair saw Balmain produce a 6-5 upset against the Thunder on Saturday, before the Queensland side hit back on Sunday to record a 13-7 win.

 

VICTORIAN PHOENIX v UWA TORPEDOES 

This weekend the UWA Torpedoes travelled to Melbourne to take on the Victorian Phoenix in a double header. 

In the Women’s games, both teams played their final AWL matches of the year and it was the Torpeodoes who walked away with 16-11 and 13-9 victories. 

In the Men’s games, the visitors proved too strong for the homeside with the Torpedoes winning 13-6 on Saturday and 13-10 on Sunday.

 

FREMANTLE MARLINS/MARINERS v CRONULLA SHARKS 

Next up it was the Cronulla Sharks who made the trip to Western Australia to face the Fremantle Marlins/Mariners.

In the men’s games, Mariners Captain and Olympian Luke Pavillard guided the home side to back to back wins against Cronulla, winning 22-13 on Saturday and 20-11 on Sunday. 

In the women’s games, the visitors proved too good for the Marlins, winning 12-8 on Saturday and 12-9 on Sunday.

 

HUNTER HURRICANES v SYDNEY UNI LIONS

It was a milestone round for the Sydney Uni Lions,  as they travelled north to take on the Hunter Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon. 

In the women’s game, Lions veteran and Olympic Silver Medallist Keesja Gofers became just the second female player to play 350 AWL games. Gofers marked the occasion by scoring one goal in her side’s 21-2 domination over the Hurricanes. 

In the men’s game, a high scoring match saw the Lions return to Sydney with the league points after defeating the Hurricanes 26-17.
