Australian Youth Water Polo Championship - Week 2 Day 2
Published Mon 21 Apr 2025
Week two of the 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) is in full swing in Perth, with our 12&U and 16&U teams taking over Perth High Performance Centre and Bicton Pool for the second day of matches.
The action from three pools at Perth High Performance Centre was livestreamed on KommunityTV - watch the replays here.
The AYWPC grants a unique opportunity to some athletes each year, with a draft conducted, giving more athletes a chance to be part of one of the biggest water polo competitions in the southern hemisphere.
Victoria’s Richmond Tigers have drafted several Tasmanian players in their 16&U Girls Green team this year, and team member Hannah is loving being reunited with her interstate teammates.
“We have played with them (the Tasmanian players) a bit before,” Hannah said. “But it's nice to play with them more, so we can get to know them when we are at other competitions.”
The Tigers bagged a solid win today, which Hannah attributes to the team's strict pregame routine and mindset.
“We (are) making sure that we're really hyped up before the game (with) good music and coming in with a happy mentality,” she said.
Sunshine Coast 16&U Boys Green player Theodore said it has been a fantastic experience playing clubs from every corner of the nation.
“It has been great (playing) more teams from New South Wales, South Australia and WA…especially coming from Queensland,” Cooper said.
“When you play more games, you get to see different tactics and how others are playing, which is really beneficial.”
AYWPC first timer Thomas has also been enjoying playing the high quality competition his team, the Geraldton 12&U Boys, has been facing.
“The strong competition is always good…there are definitely some strong players, which makes it hard,” said Thomas. “(But) seeing the stronger competition definitely makes me want to play better.”
Kirsten and Chloe from the Mermaids 12&U Girls team are also taking part in their first AYWPC this year.
While the flight from Brisbane was a long one, Chloe said she is excited to be in Perth.
“The plane trip was really long,” Chloe joked. “So, it was really nice to start playing water polo.”
Teammate Kirsten admits that she was a little nervous coming to her first big water polo event, but in the space of just two days, the young Queenslander has been having a great experience at the AYWPC.
“It's really nice (the AYWPC), and I like that we get to meet new people, and I just love playing water polo," Kirsten said.
