AUSTRALIAN YOUTH WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY 2 WRAP

Published Tue 10 Jan 2023

Plenty more quality water polo action on day two of the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, with more than 70 games played across the 14&U and 18&U divisions at pools across Perth.

Sun shined down again for stellar conditions, with the light breeze helping ease the heat to make for great playing and spectating.

In the 14&U Girls Green Division, Canberra’s Nordek Water Polo Club finished off the day with a nice win, their second for the tournament.

For 13 year old Jessica Males, competing at her second Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, she said they are enjoying the chance to compete against different teams.

“I’ve been playing water polo for four years and I like the close community, playing the games and it requires a lot of fitness which is really good,” Males said.

“This event is really fun because everyone gets together to compete and we can get to know other people from other clubs around Australia.

“A lot of our team have been playing together for a long time and then we also have some drafts who we welcome in.  When we come to these big events it's just a close bonding activity for us and we love competing in them.

“I think we have all grown in our strengths in shooting and swimming and it’s been a lot of fun,” she said.

For Balmain’s Ben Lucas, he is pleased to be back at his fourth Australian Youth Water Polo Championships and making the most of his first visit to Perth.

“It’s my first time ever here, we’re staying on Sorrento beach, so we can kick back and have fun,” he said.

The Balmain 18&U Boys defeated cross town rivals Sydney Northern Beaches (SNB) to book their spot in tomorrow’s quarter finals. They delivered two from two wins today.

“It was the first time Balmain (18&U Boys) have beaten Sydney Uni, that I’ve been part of, so it was good.  We’ve been playing pretty well.

“It was pretty tough… lucky to get to them. They beat us in the [WPNSW] Sydney Metro so it was good to get them in the AYC.

“Goal for us is to do our best, play as a team and improve from Metro [competition],” he said.
