Australian Youth Water Polo Championships - Week 2 Day 1

Published Sun 20 Apr 2025

Teams from across the country have descended on the Perth High Performance Centre (HPC) today (20 April) for the opening day of the second week of the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) in Perth.

Over the five-day championships, 73 teams across 12&U and 16&U age groups will battle it out for the title of AYWPC Champions.

Among those who had a solid start to their AYWPC campaign were the Sydney Uni Blue 16&U Boys Gold team.

Team member Charlie said that the team will take a lot of confidence from their first win of the championship.

“It's a good start for the team… we started a bit rusty, but we managed to get to where we wanted to be,” Charlie said.

Charlie is looking forward to soaking up everything the AYWPC has to offer over the next week.

“It's my favourite tournament for water polo,” he said.

“I come from a country town called Bowral…so to come here (to Perth), with all the sunny weather and water polo on offer, I love it.”

For Perth local and 16&U Girls Gold Melville Marlins player Molly, today’s game was not the first time she has been in the pool at this year's AYWPC.

Last week, Molly competed in the 18&U Girls and is looking forward to playing this week as well.

“It was tough (playing last week), but it was really fun”, Molly said.

“You get to play the sport you love, and it's never too serious when you play with your friends.”

Some of our youngest competitors are thrilled to be competing at their first major water polo event this week.

Charlie Delpech from the Drummoyne Devils 12&U Boys team loved the fact that he got to make his AYWPC debut today in Perth.

“I was meant to go (to my first AYWPC) a few years ago, but I couldn’t,” Charlie said.

"It’s good to be in Perth…When you think about it, being on the other side of the country is pretty cool.”

Like Charlie, Chloe from the Melville Marlins 12&U Girls team also enjoyed jumping in the pool for the first time at the AYWPC.

“It is exciting playing against other good players, and they can help you play to your best.”

Chloe hopes to take this opportunity in Perth to grow her water polo skills.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about what positions I need to play, when to drive, all those sorts of things,” Chloe said.
