AUSTRALIAN WATERPOLO LEAGUE CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF WOMEN'S LEAGUE
Published Fri 08 Mar 2024
The Australian Waterpolo League (AWL) is celebrating an important milestone in 2024, with the Women’s League celebrating its 20th year.
Featuring teams from across the country, the women’s league is integral to the fabric of the Australian waterpolo community, providing a pathway for talented players to train and compete at a high level.
The first year of the women’s competition took place in 2004, featuring several teams that have gone on to become long-standing competitors in the AWL.
The Fremantle Marlins are one such team, having cemented themselves in the history of the AWL over the past 20 years. After winning the AWL Championship in both the inaugural and second year of competition, the Fremantle Marlins have gone on to become joint-record holders for the most titles won in the women’s competition, equal only with the Griffith University Queensland Thunder (formally known as the Brisbane Barracudas).
Following the COVID interruption the AWL has returned to full strength, and competition is fierce as teams jostle for the top spots on the ladder leading into finals in April 2024.
The 2024 season of the AWL is the home to 20 of the Ord Minnett Aussie Stingers players as part of their preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as numerous up and coming stars of the game.
Champions of the 2023 competition, the Sydney University Lions are currently in eight place, with the top spot currently occupied by the Griffith University Queensland Thunder who have a 100% win rate so far this season.
In second, going into the seventh week of competition, is the Fremantle Marlins, with the Drummoyne Devils not far behind in third.
