Dates confirmed for 2022 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth

Water Polo Australia (WPA) is pleased to confirm the 2022 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) in Perth from 10-22 January.

WPA’s marquee event has quickly grown to become the biggest festival of water polo in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting teams from across the country in the 12&U, 14&U, 16&U and 18&U age groups.

In 2022, the AYWPC is set to take place from 10-22 January, with the inaugural Water Polo Australia Awards also set to be held during the Championships.

WPA CEO Richard McInnes said the organisation is thrilled to be working with the WA Government through Tourism WA and Water Polo WA.

“Western Australia is such a strong part of Australian Water Polo, with a proud history and we are looking forward to bringing our marquee national event to Perth,” said McInnes.

“Since the AYWPC was launched in 2019, it has quickly grown to be the largest water polo event in the country with junior players from across the country taking part as well as providing a great learning and development opportunity for coaches, referees and volunteers.

“It was disappointing that we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 event, but we are looking forward to bringing the Australian water polo community back together again in Perth in 2022,” he said.

Tourism WA Acting Managing Director Derryn Belford said it was great to welcome another exciting sporting event to Western Australia.

“This event will bring thousands of junior water polo players and their parents, coaches and other visitors to the state, which will support our hotels and local businesses,” Ms Belford said.

“Events such as the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships also help inject millions of dollars into the economy through visitor spend and provide a valuable opportunity to spread the word about our great State and what we have to offer.”

The Australian Youth Championships will head to Perth in January 2022 and again in January 2025, with the event to be held in Brisbane in 2023.

The location for the 2024 AYWPC is yet to be determined.
