Entries open for the inaugural Australian Youth Water Polo Championships

Entries opened today for the inaugural Australian Youth Water Polo Championships that will be held in Brisbane from 12-24 January 2019.

Launched earlier this year, the new event will bring together around 190 teams to contest the 12&U, 14&U, 16&U and 18&U Championship events across a two-week festival of water polo. Click here for Club registration.

Also unveiled today are the five Brisbane venues that will host the Championships - Brisbane Aquatic Centre (Sleeman Sports Complex), Valley Pool, Somerville House Aquatic Centre, Stuartholme Aquatic Precinct, All Hallows’ Consilio Aquatic Centre.

Water Polo Australia CEO Christian Renford, said the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will be the biggest celebration of water polo in the country.

“The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will be the one event Clubs won’t want to miss next season,” said Renford.

“Five great venues across Brisbane will host the two week which will feature Clubs from around the country and internationally as well.

“Not only will we see great action from junior players, but there will be plenty on offer for our coaches, referees, officials and Water Polo fans alike through the axillary events and courses on offer.

“We are encouraging Clubs to get in quick and check out the accommodation and travel packages available through our partner,” he said.

Tourism Industry Development Minister and Minister for the Commonwealth Games Kate Jones said this new event would be another great addition to Queensland’s 2019 sporting calendar.

“The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will showcase some of the best young water polo talent and put those players in the spotlight.

“Queensland is the home of premier sporting events and after the success of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games we continue to attract major sporting events to our state.

“This event will attract thousands of competitors and visitors to Brisbane in January and I encourage all those visiting to experience more of the best address on earth during their stay,” she said.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said Brisbane was ready to welcome the expected 3,000 young water polo competitors and their supporters to converge on the city in January.

“Major events like these Championships are helping contribute $165 million into our economy this year, supporting our accommodation and hospitality industries and creating more local jobs.

“The latest visitor numbers show that Brisbane has become a destination of choice, with domestic visitors spending a record $4.4 billion during their stay in our city,” he said.
