The 2022 15&U and 17&U Female National State Championships was the first time a major Australian water polo tournament was refereed by an all female lineup.
Taking place on the Gold Coast in Queensland, the National State Championships presented an opportunity for not just players, but also the emerging referees to work alongside senior referees and have the chance to referee at the national level.

FINA and senior Queensland referee Ash Kaesler was one who was particularly proud to see such a large milestone in women’s officiating.
“To see so many junior female officials at one championships, and the fact we were able to staff a junior championships, with all female officials is fantastic,” Kaesler said.
“I’m really proud to see the next generation of female referees, makes me proud of the work all of our referees have done to make sure these young female referees are in the position they are, and get the opportunities they have.
“It really sets the tone for our future being in good hands with these referees, and having strong female leaders in our officiating pool in the coming years,” she said.
Young referee Isabelle Walls (Tasmania) was another imperative official who was proud of the milestone she and all the other female officials created.
“It's great for all of us to be here and work together to officiate an all female tournament - the players, coaches and referees have learnt a lot,” Walls said.
Looking towards the future, Kaesler hopes that the National State Championships on the Gold Coast will be the start of an increased female influence.
“It sets a great precedent for players that females can be in leadership roles, and can be assertive and well-rounded officials,” Kaesler said.
