FINA World League Inter Continental Cup Tournament Underway

Published Tue 03 Apr 2018

Both the Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers teams are currently competing in the FINA World League Inter-continental Cup Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand at the Sir Owen G. Glenn National Aquatic Centre from April 3-8.

In preparation for this tournament, both teams completed a week long training camp and two test match series against USA Water Polo on the Sunshine Coast from March 26-31.

The Aussie Stingers suffered two narrow losses to USA water polo last week but will be buoyed by their resilient and energetic second half comebacks.

Stingers are one of seven women's teams competing in New Zealand and have been grouped alongside Kazakhstan, USA and New Zealand 2.

Aussie Sharks head coach Elvis Fatovic is encouraging his team to take momentum from the Sunshine Coast into this week’s tournament after ending their training camp with a 13-12 victory over USA water polo.

“It (New Zealand) will be interesting and very demanding, because we play a couple of very strong opponents.

“It is very important to win in the group stages and we have to be focused on our style as well as be as passionate as we were last week.

“The most important thing for me is our approach and defence will be the key for us. We look forward to having Aaron Younger, who plays in Hungary, join our team this week,” he said.

The Aussie Sharks are one of nine men’s teams competing this week and have been grouped with Kazakhstan, New Zealand 2, Argentina and Canada.

Water Polo Australia is pleased to announce the following squads will represent Australia in New Zealand this week:

Aussie Stingers - Lilian Hedges, Keesja Gofers, Hannah Buckling, Elle Armit, Isobel Bishop, Bronwen Knox, Alice Williams, Jessica Zimmerman, Zoe Arancini ©, Amy Ridge, Morgan Baxter, Pascalle Casey, Gabriella Palm
