TUESDAY 8 MARCH - WOMEN - AUSTRALIA 28 d ARGENTINA 3

The Aussie Stingers got their FINA World League Intercontinental Cup campaign off to a flying start overnight, with a convincing 28-3 win against Argentina.

Fittingly on International Women’s Day, four women made their international debut for the Aussie Stingers - Brooke McClean (NSW), Tenealle Fasala (QLD), Sienna Hearn (NSW) and Charlize Andrews (QLD).

The Aussie Stingers started the game strong, out scoring Argentina 7-1 in the first quarter. Managing to hold their opponents to zero scores in both the second and third quarters, the Aussie Stingers powered home to claim a 25 goal win.

Bronte Halligan (NSW) was the top goal scorer of the game for the Stingers, with an impressive six goals of her own.

Halligan said she was proud of her side for getting some points on the board early in the tournament.

“It was a really good start to our tournament - we had four debutantes and it was amazing to see them get in there and give it their best shot,” Halligan said.

“It was a great win, great teamwork, great communication and we had great fun,” she said.

The Aussie Stingers will face Canada tomorrow, having last played against them at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

“Tomorrow is a game against Canada, and it’s going to be a big game,” Halligan said,

“The last time we saw them was at the [Tokyo] Olympics. They have a few fresh faces, and a few old ones, so it will be really interesting to see what they’re like in this [Olympic] cycle,” she said.

TUESDAY 8 MARCH - MEN - AUSTRALIA 14 d ARGENTINA 5

The Aussie Sharks started their FINA World League Intercontinental Cup campaign with a solid win over Argentina, 14-5.

Despite a rocky start, and scores going goal for goal, the Aussie Sharks managed to put their foot down in the second quarter to set up a lead they were able to hold onto for the rest of the game.

Goals were plenty for the Sharks, with Luke Pavillard (WA), Chaz Poot (NSW), and Blake Edwards (VIC) all scoring three each.

Having been in Spain playing in the European Leagues, Pavillard said he enjoyed being back with the Australian outfit.

“It was a bit of a bumpy start - first time we’ve played together and first time we’ve had a proper game together with this group of guys,” Pavillard said.

“So to get into the water, play together and see what the chemistry is like, I thought it went really well and it was good to get the win.

“It was an honour to be back in the Aussie togs, I loved every minute - in and out of the water it’s a privilege to play with this great group of men.

“I was really happy with my performance, but overall I was happy with how the entire team went,” he said.

With the first game nerves out of the way, the Aussie Sharks will now turn their attention to their second match against Canada tomorrow.

“It’s going to be a good game, we had a scrimmage against them earlier in the week and they’re a good side,” Pavillard said.

“They’ve got a lot of experience so we’re going to have to refine what we’ve learnt today and take that to move forward.

“It’s going to be an excellent opportunity to test ourselves and hopefully get another win,” he said.
