MEN’S GOLD - SYDNEY UNI LIONS V DRUMMOYNE DEVILS

Drummoyne got off to a flying start, keeping their opponents scoreless and scoring two of their own in the first quarter.

Sydney Uni Lions showed composure to convert four goals in the second quarter, Drummoyne’s Nick Hallam scored two goals back to back locking up the scores heading into the half time break.

The second half continued to be a physical contest, Chaz Poot the standout for Sydney Uni in the last quarter, scoring four unanswered goals, five total in his team’s 14-11 victory.

Captain George Ford said that was one of the closest games he had been involved in all year.

“That was a tough game, the lead changed I don’t know how many times, full credit to Drummoyne they played awesome,” Ford said.

“It was very physical, very tough, there was a lot of passion in the water - it was a fantastic game to be a part of.

“It could have gone either way but we just stuck to our processes, had faith in each other and that seemed to pull through in the end,” he said.

WOMEN’S GOLD - SYDNEY UNI LIONS V UTS BALMAIN TIGERS

Sydney Uni Lions got off to a good start, the UTS Balmain Tigers were not to be discounted, holding on for the first half.

The Lions ran away with it in the third quarter, extending their lead out to five, playing a strong team game that saw six of their players score goals.

Young gun Isobelle Pamp made some crucial saves in the last quarter, the Lions taking a 12-8 win.

Captain Keesja Gofers said she is proud of her entire team for working together to get the win.

“So proud of the Lions for winning the KAP7 Cup, we couldn’t be happier with how we played today,” Gofers said.

“We had some really strong attacks, and I think our defence is what made the difference for us, we were so strong in our defence.

“It was such a team effort and that’s why it’s such an amazing feeling - it wasn’t just one or two of us, it was the entire team and that’s what makes it that little bit sweeter,” she said.

WOMEN’S BRONZE - DRUMMOYNE DEVILS V ACU CRONULLA SHARKS

Having met yesterday in the preliminary rounds, Drummoyne Devils and ACU Cronulla Sharks knew they were in for a close match.

There was nothing separating the two teams in the first three quarters, but experience came to the fore in the final quarter, with some simple last minute mistakes from the Devils allowing the Sharks to run away with the win.

Aussie Stingers Gabi Palm proved crucial in goals for the Sharks in the second half, national team mate Amy Ridge also instrumental scoring five goals.

Ridge was drafted to ACU Cronulla Sharks for the weekend, proving to be a handy addition to the Shire’s team.

“We’re all playing together for the first time, but built in to our strengths over the weekend and glad we managed to come away with the win today,” Ridge said.

“Our fitness is what got us over the line today, which is really positive for us. Towards the end we managed to pull away from them and I think that really is a credit to our experience.

“It’s always fun to play club games and put our training into practice,” she said.

MEN’S BRONZE - UNSW WESTS MAGPIES V UTS BALMAIN TIGERS

UNSW Wests Magpies got off to a good start, claiming a handy 7-2 lead at half time.

The strength right across the pool proved to be their winning edge, and although the UTS Balmain Tigers attempted a last minute comeback in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t enough to stop the 2019 Australian Waterpolo League champions.

Aussie Sharks Locky Hollis scored four goals, with national teammate Andrew Ford and young gun Charlie Negus scoring three each to help their team to a 15-10 win.

UNSW Captain and Dual Olympian Joel Dennerley said it took a full team effort to get across the line today.

“Nice to finish the season with a win, disappointing we weren’t in the gold medal match today but the boys have played well these last couple of days and we’re happy with the water polo we put together,” Dennerley said.

“The games this weekend have been really competitive, every team has put their best foot forward.

“We’re lucky at Wests that we’ve got a lot of depth in our team, Locky (Hollis), Andy (Ford) and Tim (Putt) really stepped up this weekend, and even some of our younger players like Charlie (Negus) contributed so that was really pleasing,” he said.
