FORMER AUSSIE STINGERS CAPTAIN AND FOUR TIME OLYMPIAN BRONWEN KNOX NAMED DEPUTY CHEF DE MISSION FOR PARIS OLYMPIC GAMES

Former Captain of the Aussie Stingers and four time Olympian Bronwen Knox, was today named as Deputy Chef de Mission for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Knox will form part of Chef de Mission Anna Meares OAM’s support team in Paris that will provide assistance and guidance for the athletes in the Australian team.

Hailing from Brisbane, Knox won two Olympic bronze medals during her career, notching up more than 350 caps for Australia. While she retired from national representative teams following the Tokyo Olympics, Knox's passion for water polo has continued; only last week helping to steer UWA Torpedoes to a historic silver medal in the Australian Waterpolo League.

Knox also brings to the role strong experience away from the pool, becoming a qualified lawyer which has since led to roles serving as the National Integrity Manager across Judo Australia, Boxing Australia and Taekwondo Australia.

After sitting in the grandstands at the Sydney Olympic Games as a teenager watching Australia win a historic women’s water polo gold medal, Knox's passion for the Olympic movement was ignited and something she carried through her whole career.

“It feels surreal at the moment. Being part of the broader Olympic Team and Olympic movement has been such a big part of my life, so to be able to continue that is a great opportunity,” Knox said.

“It is such a privilege to serve in the position and give back to teams beyond the ones I’ve been directly involved with.

“This will be an exciting Olympic Games for me in a new role and I’m very much looking forward to working with the broader Australian Team in the lead up to and during the Paris Games,” she said.

With the Paris 2024 Olympic Games spread across a number of venues, the AOC have announced four Olympians to assist Chef de Mission Anna Meares in France, with Kenny Wallace OAM (canoe kayak), Kyle Vander-Kuyp (athletics) and Mark Knowles OAM (hockey) also appointed alongside Knox.

“With our sports spread out across Paris, we have these experienced Olympians with great leadership qualities joining our Chef de Mission Anna Meares, a four time Olympian and Olympic champion,” said AOC President Ian Chesterman.

“These are all people with a deep understanding of the needs of athletes – in either the team environment or individual sports.

“The Paris Games do provide a geographical challenge and our athletes can be assured that no matter where they are competing, they will have the resources they need and we can respond to issues as they arise,” Mr Chesterman said.
