Long road to KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships

Travelling to Brisbane for the KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships will be easy for the 14&U Ovens and Murray Water Polo team, after racking up thousands of kilometres each week just to train together.

Ovens and Murray is the border region of New South Wales and Victoria, covering an area from Wagga Wagga in the north to Wangaratta in the south.

But distance is one thing that won’t stop these girls from playing water polo, with 13-year-old Caitlin Wallace travelling 600km return from Canberra just to be able to train with her team mates.

Coach Kristy Hogan said that the Ovens and Murray community are so proud of the team.

“They are all growing as young women, and we are all very proud of the reputation and example these girls are setting in our community,” Hogan said.

“They really do represent the grassroots, who are the genuine back bone of the Ovens and Murray community.”

Ovens & Murray will be one of 187 teams that are set to line up across the KAP7 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships.

Kristy said she is looking forward to seeing her teams’ hard work finally pay off.

“A lot of these girls have trained all winter in preparation for this tournament,” she said.

“We are looking to improve on last year and I believe the team has put in the effort and we are aiming to finish in the top 15.”

Most of all, the Ovens and Murray girls are looking forward to seeing their Aussie Stingers idols in action.

“The girls are a bit star struck by the green and gold – these girls know more about the Aussie Stingers then they know about themselves,” Hogan said.

The Aussie Stingers and Aussie Sharks will play against USA in a three test match series as a part of the AYWPC on 14, 16 and 18 January.

Tickets are selling fast, but are available at https://bit.ly/AUSvUSAtix

If you can’t be in Brisbane, you can catch all the action LIVE on the OVO Play App.
