Melbourne University Sport has been recognised as a finalist for the Community Sport Award at the 2020 Australian Pride in Sport Awards.
In its inaugural year, Melbourne University partnered with Monash University and Melbourne Surge Water Polo Club to show their support for Pride in Sport by hosting a Pride Round.
Melbourne University Water Polo Club Vice President Thao Phan said that the club felt it an important initiative to recognise.
“This was our way of showing solidarity as a club and that it’s okay to be who you are at our club,” Phan said.
“We’re so proud to be nominated for the Community Sport Award - it’s more than what we expected,” she said.
“Holding Pride Round for us was our way of showing our support for some of the great initiatives out there. We didn’t just do it for our club, but the wider community.”
Melbourne University Sport Pride and Diversity Coordinator Chris Bunting said that the university is really proud of the water polo club.
“They showed a tremendous amount of leadership and initiative to get a Pride Round up and running,” Bunting said.
“The way they did it isn’t just going to help water polo at our university, but water polo in all of Victoria,” he said.
“They’ve paved the way, and their initiative will benefit the sport more broadly - I think that really shows their position as leaders.”
The 2020 Australian Pride in Sport Awards is on Wednesday 1 April 2020 6pm – 9pm at Showtime Events Centre, 61 S Wharf Promenade, South Wharf, Melbourne. For more information, click here.
