The Melville girls brought it from the beginning, leading their opposition 5-0 at half time.

In the third quarter, the Mermaids came out firing, and with the backing of their home crowd behind them they rose up to the challenge.

Mermaids fought back, quickly gaining momentum and bouncing back with an impressive four goals in the third quarter.

However, Melville saw their chance for victory and weren’t ready to give up their lead, adding three goals to their total in the last quarter, earning them the win 9-6.

Melville coach, Christian Hoad was ecstatic at the win and couldn’t contain his excitement for their well-deserved gold medal.

“They’re a great bunch of girls, the result is good for the club and good for Water Polo in Western Australia,” Hoad said.

“The last 3 days we’ve had the belief that we could do it, and today we did”.

Melville player Milly Sullivan shared her coach’s excitement, with her taking away a win at her first nationals.

“This is my first nationals and this feeling is amazing, I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet,” Sullivan said.

“Christian knows so much about the sport and it’s been great learning from him”.

In the bronze medal match, ACU Cronulla Sharks came out on top, winning over Ovens and Murray in a penalty shootout.
