The OVO Play round six match of the week headed west with the UWA Torpedoes playing host to UTS Balmain Tigers in Perth at the halfway point of competition.
In their first games at home for the 2019 season, UWA Torpedoes were eager to put on a show for their fans against a Tigers team visiting from Sydney.
For the women’s fixture, UWA put out a solid performance but just fell short against the Tigers with Aussie Stingers Alive Williams (4), Rowie Webster (3), Pascalle Casey (2) all tallying up goals for the Tigers outfit.
While in the men's match at HBF Stadium it was another entertaining contest in which defence for both teams was solid resulting in a low scoring affair.
However, Tigers pulled through in the end and produced a 5-3 effort to claim the win. Victorious Tigers player Hugh Anstey was excited with the result for his team.
“It was a really good win for us, that’s now two wins on the road and it’s perfect for where we are at in the season and now we just need to build on this.
“Our plan was to shut down their outside shooters, we were a bit tired so we had to play a more zone type defence and channel the right shooters to shoot so we could conserve our energy,” he said.
Speaking on their style of play, Anstey enjoys the fact Tigers are renowned for their passionate play.
“It’s part of how we play as our club, we like it when other teams don't want to play us because of the way we play and that showed in our result today,” said Anstey.
AROUND THE GROUNDS
PERTH:
In a couple of big results for the women's competition, Fremantle Marlins issues the Tiger women their first loss of 2019 on Friday with a 15-9 result.
Rio Olympian and Aussie Stingers Zoe Arancini led the way for her side with a four-goal haul helping lift the home team to victory.
However, in the return match on Sunday, Tigers bounced back to return serve and also give Marlins their first taste of defeat in 2019 with a six goals to one effort.
While in the men’s matches, they took a narrow 11-10 victory on Friday before a big 9-1 win on Sunday against Tigers.
Triple goal scorer from Fremantle Mariners Will Mackay said it was a great result for the group after they went in with a big focus on defence.
“We wanted to sharpen up our defence, on Friday night it was a high scoring game and we had to claw our way back so there was a big focus on defence for this game.
“I'm always happy to score some goals, but full credit to the boys for the result,” he said.
SYDNEY:
In four entertaining matches, UNSWS Wests men and women squared off with Hunter Hurricanes for a double header across the weekend.
The UNSW Wests Magpies (men) started well in their first encounter to record a 17-8 win. Earlier in the day the Killer Whales (women) took the points with a 12-7 victory.
In the return matches on Sunday, Hunter Hurricanes came out hard but were still unable to overcome UNSW Wests who were strong enough to claim the wins in the women's (12-10) and men's (14-13) matches.
The men form Drummoyne Devils sent a warning shot to the competition with a strong 16-9 win over reigning OVO AWL champions Sydney Uni Lions during their derby clash on Sunday at a glorious Drummoyne Pool.
In a fast-paced game Blake Edwards (5), Nick Hallam (4), Nic Brooks (2) and Lachy Edwards (2) did the damage between them with a majority of the goals for the Devils.
The Sydney Uni Lions women lead from start to finish in their battle against Drummoyne, with the Lions doing enough to hold on after a last quarter comeback from the Devils.
Aussie Stingers Danielle Morrisey continues to step up with a relatively young team around her to net herself five goals in the match and play a crucial role in the win.
ADELAIDE:
ACU Cronulla Sharks returned to Sydney with three wins out of four matches with the men dropping their game against Jets men on Saturday night in a tough 9-7 loss.
The Adelaide Jets women are still looking to get on the winners list in 2019 and will be eager to turn things around when they land in Sydney for their round 7 clash against UTS Balmain Tigers before heading north to Brisbane for clashes against Queensland Thunder.
