PERTH

The UWA Torpedoes women were out to prove a point in round nine against Hunter Hurricanes for a position in the finals and their performances didn't disappoint, with both their matches against a visiting Hunter team decided by only one goal.

On Thursday the Torpedoes women clinched a 9-8 victory courtesy of four goals to Dayna O'Leary with great support from Tayla Walsh who scored three of her own.

Then on Saturday, Torpedoes went down in a dramatic 13-14 penalty shootout.

While the Torpedoes men suffered two heavy losses at the hands of Hunter Hurricanes.

Still in Perth, both the men's and women's Fremantle sides continue to impress heading into the pointy end of the season.

Fremantle Marlins (women) player Madeleine Quinn spoke after the first of their two round nine victories against Hunter saying the confidence is building among the group.

"We definitely came out strong, it was a good game, it was definitely something we needed in order to get to finals.

"On behalf of all the girls we definitely stepped it up tonight.

"Confidence has risen from where it has been which is good, it is something we needed going into a six game road trip in round 10," she said.

On Friday Marlins claimed the win 11-5 then backed it up again on Sunday with a 13-6 victory.

While the Fremantle Mariners (men) continue to score in abundance and keep the wins ticking over. Friday's big 22-11 win was followed by a successful Sunday performance, 14-9 over Hunter.

Mariners' James Fannon said the side had a strong focus on attack at training throughout the week.

"We've been training all week to get our attack sorted, so it was good to play our systems and get some goals on the board.

"We like to play hard in defence and try to take the ball up the pool as quick as we can. So getting up there and taking the advantage before the other team gets set allows us to score a few more goals," he said.

SYDNEY

After claiming two wins in their home pool on Thursday night, the Drummoyne Devils claimed back to back wins again on Saturday over FYFE Adelaide Jets.

In the men's match triple goal scorer Jack Rector was pleased with the result.

"It was good hit out against the Jets, we ended up winning 13-6, it was a good game to practice our moves, extra man and counter attacks for a couple of tough games against Fremantle next week," he said.
