National Competition Framework Announcement
Published Wed 29 Jul 2020
Water Polo Australia is pleased to unveil the newly established National Competition Framework (NCF) and National Competitions Calendar (NCC), developed by the Competition Advisory Panel, that will come into effect in 2021.
The framework sets the long term strategy for the sport’s national competitions to provide clarity and consistency for water polo competitors across the country.

The Circular Calendar Model (CCM) shows the relationship between State , National and International competitions, with the Framework outlining the purpose and operating principles of each national event as well as how/if they contribute to State/National selection.
The post COVID-19 return to sport protocols means that the resumption of sport currently looks different State to State and Water Polo Australia is working with the different levels of Government, State Associations and venue operators around the delivery of the 2021 calendar.
The below dates for national and international tournaments are contingent on Government advice around COVID-19 and any restrictions in place, with WPA to provide regular updates on event status.
Water Polo Australia CEO, Richard McInnes, said the new National Competition Calendar and Framework is designed to provide clarity to national water polo events.
“The Competition Advisory Panel has worked to develop a well articulated competition pathway that provides clarity not just for competitors, but Clubs, coaches and parents.
“We needed to define the role our national events play within the player pathway and highlight the outcomes Clubs and coaches should be aspiring to at each event.
“While all events are designed to give players a great water polo experience, we do have events within our calendar that have high performance outcomes and in the past, we haven’t been very good at sharing those details or being clear about the purpose of each event.
“The calendar doesn’t capture all water polo events, with details of different State and Club levels events provided at a local level.
“Our Competitions Advisory Panel was made up of coaches, parents, officials, club management, States and national staff to provide a great insight into how we can create a calendar that best supports our broad water polo community. I would like to thank the panel for giving up their time and knowledge to help produce this new framework.
“As highlighted in the calendar, Water Polo Australia is committed to a yearly review to ensure the framework and calendar is working to achieve its desired outcomes,” he said.
