PATH TO PERTH - AYWPC A FAVOURITE FOR TASSIES NEXT GEN
Published Fri 21 Mar 2025
The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) is often a family affair for Water Polo Tasmania.
A small but tight knit water polo community, the island state is excited to be sending five teams to this year’s AYWPC in Perth.
Across all the Tassie team age groups, not only will you find a hunger to make the most of their time at the AYWPC, but you will also find a member of the Fenton family.
Siblings Holly (Girls 14&U), Archie (Boys 16&U) and Chelsea Fenton (Girls 18&U) will all take to the pool in Perth.
Chelsea said it will be a pretty special moment being able to watch her brother and sister as well as compete herself at the same competition.
“It will be a lot of fun getting to watch them,” said Chelsea. “It is great that our games will be on at different times because it is a lot of fun getting to cheer for them and watching them go through the same amazing AYWPC journey that I have”.
Younger sister Holly will make up the 14&U cohort, who will all experience the AYWPC for the first time next month.
Water Polo Tasmania AYWPC Club Representative Kirsty Sing, said that she has seen first hand how the AYWPC lights a fire within young players - a fire that keeps them coming back year after year.
“For our 14&Us this will be the first time that they get to go away to play water polo,” said Kirsty. “The AYWPC for this age group really gives the players a taste of travelling away, representing their state and gets them hooked on the sport”.
Kirsty, who also has her own daughter playing for the Girls 18&U team, said it has been fantastic being able to watch both players and teams grow as they progress through the age groups.
“I remember watching my daughter’s team compete as 14&Us at 2022 AYWPC and they were barely able to get the ball up in 30 seconds,” she jokes.
“It is just lovely to be able to see them grow over that time and I guess that's the best part about being a small community, we really get to watch these kids grow as players and teams.”
