PATH TO PERTH - GERALDTON ARE BACK BIGGER THAN EVER FOR 2025 AYWPC

Geraldton Water Polo Association will be back bigger than ever at the 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) in Perth this month.
The Western Australian association is sending three teams to this year’s Championships, the most they have ever fielded.
Geraldton Water Polo Treasurer Melissa Sojan, said that the growth of Water Polo throughout the region enabled them to this year expand their presences at the AYWPC.
“This is the first year we are sending three teams,” said Melissa. “Our junior competition has grown so much and we had the players to fill another team, so we wanted to put that opportunity out there for them to compete”.
This will be the third consecutive year that players from the association's 18&U Boys and Girls teams will compete at the AYWPC.
Many of these players will be hoping to make a strong impression in Perth and a string of solid showings in their local competitions, has put them in good stead to do just that.
Deciding to combine forces with New Wave Water Polo Club in order to boost numbers, Melissa is looking forward to seeing what the Geraldton Water Polo 18&U Boys team can produce.
“I’m really excited to see how the team will go this year,” she said. “The boys in previous years have normally played up an age group, so it will be good to see how they perform within their own age group”.
Melissa is also anticipating a strong showing by the 18&U Girls team who will be led by team captain Evie Prout.
Like other clubs across the country, Geraldton has undertaken fundraising efforts which has helped reduce the costs of sending not only both 18&U teams, but a 16&U Girls team.
Melissa believes that this fundraising has helped ensure that players and the Geraldton water polo community can continue to reap the benefits that competing in the AYWPC provide.
“We have four clubs in Geraldton and all four clubs have full junior teams,” she said. “The AYWPC would have a lot to do with this growth because players have the chance to play a lot more and at a higher level.”
