PATH TO PERTH - SNB BREAKERS GIRLS 16&Us LOOKING FOR A GOLD BREAKTHROUGH AT AYWPC

The SNB Breakers Girls 16&Us team will be in red hot form when they take to the pool in Perth next month for the 2025 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC).

After falling agonisingly short in last year’s AYWPC final against the Mermaids Water Polo Club , the Breakers will be looking to go one better this time around. 

While the team are focused on this weekend’s gold medal match of their Metro competition, SNB Breakers coach Stefano Silvi said the team will be primed and ready for the AYWPC as they aim to make another finals appearance.  

“Eight of the players in this year’s team were in the team last year as well,” said Stefano. “So the memories from last year’s finals appearance are still fresh for the majority of our players.” 

Stefano said that one of his favourite parts about the AYWPC is the passion and competitiveness the week-long competition draws out of his players.

“This is the magic of the AYWPC, after we won the semi-final game in 2024 the players literally shared tears of joy,” he said. 

“When we lost the final it was tears of disappointment. But that is what sport is about. It is a wave of emotion and that’s why we love it.”

Stefano believes that the exposure to high quality teams, clubs and systems at the AYWPC is not only valuable for the players who attend, but coaches as well. 

“We are always competing against the same teams,” he said. “The best thing about the AYWPC is getting the opportunity to see teams from right across the country. 

“This exposure to teams from other states and being able to observe their different systems and mentalities, as well as having to prepare a team for an intensive draw,  I think is great training for us coaches as well.”
