Porter scores NCAA title in Freshman year

Aussie Sharks rising star Nic Porter’s dominant display in the cage at California has helped USC Trojans secure their 10th national title over Stanford 14-12.

Porter’s part in the title continues a proud history of Aussies winning NCAA Water Polo Championships.

In his freshman year at USC Porter drew on previous international experiences, which included a fortnight training with Croatian club side JUG Dubroovnik earlier this year, to help his college performances.

He was also part of the Australian men’s 2018 European tour which saw the side secure a silver medal at July’s BENU Cup.

It was a successful year for the Trojans dominating competition to claim the men’s first-ever 30-win season.

Porter pulled off an incredible 12 saves to help play a major part in USC’s successful performance.

After racing out of the blocks early, USC held a 5-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Porter assisted USC in their sixth goal when he hit a Trojans driver with a pin point pass for a counterattack strike early in the second, while diffusing a 1v1 later in the match.

The second half saw Porter’s side further their lead with back to back goals late in the third term.

Although Trojans were outscored by Stanford 3-8 in the last quarter, Porter and his teammates kept the opposition at bay to close out a memorable 14-12 victory in their 14th straight NCAA final appearance.

Porter was one of six Trojans to earn All-Tournament honours, named on the Second Team in a great achievement for his first college season.

Australia’s Born 20&U Male player James Kolenda was also part of the winning USC Trojans roster which was the university's 110th national championship of all-time.
