With the Christmas break fast approaching, teams across the country are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for the 2023 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships in Perth.
Having had limited access to water polo competitions over the last few years due to COVID-19 lockdowns and border closures, Melbourne’s DVE Aquatic are looking forward to jumping back in the pool in January.
16&U player Zach said his team have been training really hard, and are hoping it will pay off when they arrive in Perth.
“Our training has been going well, we’ve had many training sessions with each other where our coach has taught us positional plays and passing techniques to better our game play,” Zach said.
“We have also recently started having practice matches against another team going to the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, which has helped us play better as a team.
“Missing so much water polo in the last few years has meant we are super keen on being in the water and competing at all events possible.
“One of the exciting parts about this year’s Australian Youth Water polo Championships being in Perth is simply travelling to Western Australia and playing in different venues,” he said.
Team mate Jeremy said his team are also excited to have three players from another club joining them in Perth.
“Three players from the Geelong Marlins have joined our team for the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships,” Jeremy said.
“We played our first matches together at Canberra Cup and also against each other in our Summer Club tournament.
“We’re all very excited about heading to Perth, it’s a good opportunity to play against the Western Australian teams, and also the best teams in Australia,” he said.
Also playing for DVE 16&U Boys, Liam said the team have set themselves some goals for the competition.
“Our team is filled with a bunch of fantastic players that have a very strong bond with each other,” Liam said.
“Our goals are to try and win our matches, and to improve our game play throughout the competition.
“We are looking forward to playing the tough teams that are going to help us improve.
“We’re also super excited to watch the Aussie Sharks and Aussie Stingers in action!” he said.
