Round 3 OVO Australian Waterpolo League

Round three of the OVO Australian Waterpolo League kicks off today with six days of competition and 34 matches.

The UWA Torpedoes embark on a six game road trip beginning with a match against the Hunter Hurricanes.

UWA women’s head coach, Scott Schwieckle is positive that with a young team including the likes of Madi Rigo, Pippa Pedley and Glenda Morgan the team is quite progressive.

“Each game they are challenged, they have to make decisions about what is right and wrong.

“If it's wrong, they must learn from those errors and if it’s right that’s even better,” he said.

Like the Torpedoes, the Hunter Hurricanes women also have a strong dose of youth in their team.

Hurricane’s women’s head coach Mitch Baird said: “We’ve got a lot of young girls, we are going to make a lot of mistakes, but we are also going to do a lot of good things so it’s important to learn and get better every week.”

With the added excitement of playing in front of family and friends this week, it is important that the Hurricanes don’t forget their ultimate goal which Baird said is to improve every game.

On the men’s side of the draw, both Hunter Hurricanes and UWA Torpedoes men’s teams will have various challenges to overcome if they want to secure the four points.

New head coach, Florian Naroska said: “The pre-season was quite short, me as a new coach and missing senior players, it’s new circumstances.”

Naroska, a former Torpedoes player himself, looks positively at these challenges ahead.

“Being a recent player from the club it helps because you know the structures and personalities of the club.”

“For us it’s step by step, game by game we will build to be competitive come finals times.”

This week’s home team, Hunter Hurricanes will enjoy the local support later today.

But with significant personnel change since last season, the Hurricane men understand they face a tough opposition.

Hunter Hurricanes men’s coach Daniel Robinson said “it’s always good to be at home preparing for a game in front of the local community.”

“Historically we haven’t been one of the fittest teams, and we really want to turn that around this year.”

“Our US important Gordan Marshall, joins the likes of Keenan and Mitch Marsden, Chris Boyko and Connor Morgan who have all returned to the team, meaning there has been a huge personnel shift.”
